Lots of people have difficulties along the way after they adopt a cat. Never take on a pet unless you are prepared to be responsible. However, even with preparation, you can’t possibly hope to foresee every problem that these cute felines will cause. A great idea for you is to read the suggestions here and add a few more tidbits to your list of expectations.
Cats love to much on grass and plants such as catnip. There are plants however that are poisonous to cats. Chrysanthemums and holly are beautiful and common around the Holidays, but can be very toxic to cats. Other plants that are toxic or lethal include lilies, rhubarb and daffodils.
Cats are often nocturnal creatures. This means their behavior is quite active during the night. If your kittens are keeping you awake into the middle of the night, close the door to your bedroom. Your cat will not bother you in the middle of the night if this area is off limit.
Cats are great family pets, but small children might be too rough. Teach your kid how to properly handle a cat. Demonstrate the proper way to pick up a cat and what they can do with the cat. Cats don’t have strong bones like dogs do, so they need to be treated gently.
Let your cat exercise their hunting instinct. Cats are natural born hunters; however, this does not mean you need to allow mice to invade your home. Hide treats and toys throughout your home, and your cat will have a blast hunting down their treats. You can also find feather and laser toys that your cat can chase and pounce on.
If you have more than one cat, you should have as many litter boxes as you have cats. If too many cats have to share the same litter box, it can mean disaster! The cats may choose not to share their eliminating space, instead, using other areas, such as clean laundry or hidden corners of the home to do their business.
Feeding them lots of different foods can lower their chances of becoming finicky eaters. If you start them off eating the same type of food all of the time and you never change it up, this will most likely be the only food they will eat in the future.
Just as important as it is to take care of your own teeth, you need to take care of your cats as well. Cats can develop tarter and plaque build-up over time. Purchasing a toothbrush and toothpaste made specially for felines is a great way to keep your cats teeth clean and healthy.
If your cat has bad breath, a trip to the vet is in order. Bad breath in cats can be a red flag for tooth decay or more serious conditions. These include diabetes, stomach problems and lung disorders. So, if your cat’s breath smells worse than the food he eats, get to the bottom of the issue before it gets out of control.
The above advice is helpful for cats of all ages and breeds. Though certain aspects of having a cat remain the same, all cats differ, so what applies to one may not apply to another. If you’re not having fun after you adopt a cat, there is a serious problem.
